The Fascinating Life Cycle of Cultivated Mushrooms | BSPR (2024)

Mushroom growers need a variety of tools and supplies. Some, like a hygrometer, measure humidity levels, while others, like a spray bottle, are critical for sterilization.

Other tools help maintain precise temperature and moisture levels, while microscopes provide a more in-depth look at mycelium and fruiting conditions. Finally, tools such as scalpels allow the mushroom grower to transfer mycelium from Petri dishes or grain spawn without introducing contamination.

1. Microscope

The ability to observe and analyze the microscopic features of a mushroom colony is essential for successful cultivation. This includes the observation of the spores and mycelium as well as other key factors like the surface ornamentation of the pileipellis or cuticle. A microscope can also be used to monitor and track growth trends.

A compound light microscope is typically the preferred type of microscope for examining mushrooms, as these are relatively affordable and offer sufficient magnification to observe the spores of most species. For more advanced applications, however, a digital or scanning electron microscope may be required.

When observing a sample of mushroom spores, it’s important to take detailed notes and capture photographs or sketches of the specimen. This will allow you to compare the spore characteristics and other microscopic details with reliable mushroom identification resources, such as field guides or online databases.

To properly prepare a sample for microscopy, ensure the specimen is mounted on a clean, glass microscope slide using a suitable mounting medium or other technique. Then, ensure that the slide is positioned correctly over the target area of the specimen. It’s also a good idea to use the microscope’s zoom capabilities to focus on the most important areas of the sample, such as the gills or cap surface.

Having the right microscope is just as important as any other tool in the mushroom cultivator’s kit. If you don’t already have one, consider purchasing a 30X Handheld Microscope for a versatile and convenient way to inspect your crop. This compact microscope measures just 5-3/4″ x 1-5/8″ x 3/4″ and is equipped with an LED light for clear illumination during inspections. It also features a focus knob that allows for quick and precise adjustments.

2. Hygrometer

A hygrometer is the unsung hero of your at-home mushroom growing operation. Providing an accurate reading of the air’s moisture content, it allows you to stay on top of your environment and make adjustments when necessary. Crispy leaves scream for help, signaling that the air is too dry, while moldy bases and yellowing leaves are a sign of excess moisture. By monitoring your hygrometer, you can create the perfect climate for your mushrooms and maximize their growth potential.

Depending on the species you’re cultivating, your substrate’s humidity requirements will differ, as will its hydration method. For instance, straw and wood chips are common mushroom cultivation substrates, but each has its own moisture-holding capacity and hydration methods. It’s important to choose a substrate that has a high enough moisture-holding capacity so you can maintain adequate moisture levels throughout the entire growth cycle.

The ideal moisture level for at-home mushroom growers is 80% to 90%. Keeping your environment within this range will prevent your mushrooms from drying out and ensure that they have all the nutrients they need to thrive. Insufficient moisture levels can lead to mycelial growth issues and fruiting body formation delays.

To increase the humidity in your mushroom growing space, you can use various techniques. A popular solution is a spray bottle, which can be used to mist the area with water and provide consistent humidity levels. However, this can be a messy and labor-intensive option, especially for larger-scale operations.

Another option is to use a humidifier, which can be much more effective than a spray bottle — as well as to use equipment filled with a substrate of sterilized materials. These devices use a disc that rotates to break up water into droplets and disperse them into the air. They are often smaller and more portable than central humidifiers, and they’re also better suited for small spaces.

3. Humidifier

Humidity is vital to mushroom cultivation, as it plays a key role in water absorption, temperature regulation and gas exchange within the substrate and fruiting bodies. Insufficient humidity can result in slow or stunted growth, while excessive moisture may lead to contamination, bacterial infection and rotting. Using a humidifier can help to maintain optimum conditions and ensure that your mushrooms are healthy, happy and productive.

To achieve a high level of humidity, it is important to consider the size of your grow room, martha tent or greenhouse as well as the environmental factors of the area you are growing in. Depending on your location and desired growing conditions, you can use a variety of humidification methods to get the best results for your mushrooms.

The most common method of humidification for mushroom cultivation is to mist the surface of the growing substrate regularly with clean water. This can be done manually, using an automated misting system or with a spray bottle. In this way, the mushroom spores are kept damp and healthy, while the substrate remains free from excessive dust and debris.

Another common method of humidification for mushroom cultivation is through the use of fans, which can help to circulate air and reduce the risk of condensation. This is a simple and cost-effective solution, and it can be used in conjunction with other humidification methods.

Finally, ultrasonic humidifiers are a popular choice for many home mushroom growers, as they produce a fine mist of water that doesn’t disrupt airflow in the grow room. For larger setups, there are also commercial-grade options available, such as the Ideal-Air and House of Hydro foggers, which feature industrial-grade motors and multi-directional misting heads that provide extensive coverage over a wide area.

4. Spray Bottle

A spray bottle is one of the most essential tools for a mushroom grower. It’s used to mist the surface of a growing block daily, and can help maintain a high humidity in a fruiting chamber. Spray bottles are cheap and easy to find in most households. They can also be used to mist the substrate or the inside of the fruiting chamber to increase humidity.

The spray bottle generates water droplets that stick to surfaces and increase humidity through evaporation. However, it’s important to not directly mist the mushrooms because doing so can cause a bacterial blotch.

While a blotch may not be fatal, it can still inhibit the growth of mushrooms and should be avoided at all costs. Another option for increasing the humidity in your fruiting chamber is to use an ultrasonic humidifier. These devices use spinning discs to vaporize water droplets that are then pumped out into your room. They can provide a very consistent level of humidity, which is ideal for a fruiting chamber.

A few other items every mushroom grower should have include a fan to circulate the air, a temperature controller (specifically for regulating temperatures), and a fruiting chamber. A basic hydroponics tent makes a good fruiting chamber, but you can also build your own out of a box or other type of plastic enclosure. In addition to these pieces of equipment, a grower will need a supply of supplies including mushroom spawn and substrate, a microscope (if doing lab work), and a spray bottle. For more advanced mushroom growers, a laminar flow hood and sterilized laboratory equipment are also recommended. But, this is not necessary for most beginner mushroom growers.

5. Growth Chamber

Mushrooms grow best in a fruiting chamber that has well-regulated temperature, humidity and air flow. A growth chamber also provides a safe environment for the growth of mushrooms and protects them from external contaminants, such as pests and other diseases.

Muscles grown in a fruiting chamber tend to be larger, healthier and more flavorful than those grown outdoors. They’re also easier to maintain because a growth chamber is sterile and free from pests, wild animals and other natural influences.

One popular setup for a fruiting chamber includes a plastic storage container lined with Perlite and a layer of mushroom substrate on top. The Perlite allows for adequate air circulation in the chamber and helps to retain moisture, which is essential for fruiting. It’s important to note that different species of mushrooms have different requirements for humidity, temperature and air flow. It’s a good idea to keep a notebook by your fruiting chamber and write down the Temp., RH and FAE (Final Apparent Elevation) every time you check your mushrooms.

A fruiting chamber can be used in several different ways to achieve optimum conditions for the growth of mushrooms. Some people choose to create a fruiting chamber out of an empty garbage can, while others prefer to use a more advanced setup like a grow tent. Regardless of which setup you choose, it’s important to monitor the mushrooms regularly and make adjustments as necessary to ensure success. For example, if your mushrooms are not producing fruiting bodies, you might need to spray the substrate with water. Other potential solutions include using a humidifier, increasing the amount of light or using a different type of substrate.
