A recent study conducted with Prof. dr. Rozemarijn Vliegenthart, involving 10,431 participants from the Imaging in Lifelines_NL (ImaLife) study, has revealed that lung nodules, often early indicators of lung cancer, are more common in non-smoking adults over 45 than previously thought. This challenges existing assumptions that non-smokers are low-risk for such findings. The study found that 42% of participants had at least one lung nodule. These results closely mirror those found in high-risk smokers, suggesting that lung nodule management guidelines may need to be reassessed for non-smokers.Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/em9ZmmCR#LungHealth #MedicalResearch #ImaLine #Lifelines

A recent study by health scientist Aranka Vivienne Ballering, using data from diverse #cohorts such as the Family Medicine Network (FaMe-Net), the Lifelines_NL database and the long-term TRAILS study by Rijksuniversiteit Groningen / UMCG, highlights a significant discrepancy in the medical diagnostics provided to men and women. Ballering's studies reveal that women are less likely to receive diagnostic tests for common complaints compared to men, resulting in more symptom-based diagnoses rather than specific diseases. Despite visiting general practitioners (GPs) more frequently, women undergo fewer physical examinations and diagnostic imaging tests than men. Ballering emphasizes that these findings do not imply discrimination by GPs but highlight potential biases in clinical practices. Addressing these disparities requires a nuanced understanding of gender in medical diagnostics and proactive efforts to include women in medical research. Spondyloartritiscentrum GLAS has just released its latest findings on the long-term effects of TNF-α inhibition in patients with radiographic axial spondyloarthritis (r-axSpA). This prospective #cohort study, which includes standardized bi-annual measurements of bone mineral density (BMD) and spinal radiographs, offers valuable insights into the impacts of #TNFi treatment over an 8-year period.Key Findings:- Significant improvement in lumbar spine BMD Z-score, particularly within the first 4 years of TNFi treatment.- Despite these improvements, 16% of patients developed new vertebral fractures, highlighting the ongoing risk and the need for continuous clinical vigilance. This study underscores the importance of long-term management and monitoring in r-axSpA care. Special thanks to the dedicated team: Mark Siderius, Freke Wink, Stan Kieskamp, Fiona Maas, Reinhard Bos, Frank G.M. Kroese, Anneke Spoorenberg, and Suzanne Boezerooij-Arends.For more details, read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/etER5Ri5#GLAS #CohortResearch #UMCG #AxialSpondyloarthritis #Rheumatology #BoneHealth #TNFαInhibition #LongTermCare #HealthcareInnovation #ClinicalResearch
