There no crowded city streets, just barren, sun-baked desert. And many of the bulls seemed more curious than furious. The second annual running of the bulls kicked off here Saturday with about 600 1 runners, some dressed in chicken suits, matching wits and stamina against 40 bulls.

No one was injured, although both the runners and the bulls the triple digits. Phoenix promoter Phil Immordino bulls seemed exhausted by their exercise in temperatures hovering, around flipped several into the air. you see footprints in my back, you'll know I didn't make it," Ray Sheppard, 61, of Phoenix joked as he prepared to run in a knockoff of the 400-year-old running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. Immordino had hoped for a crowd of 10,000 to 15,000 for the threeday weekend, but only 3,000 people turned out Saturday. About 2,000 watched a bullfighting and bullriding event Friday.

The event continues today with two more runs. Last year's bull run was held in Arizona, at a Mohave County site on the outskirts of Mesquite. Man arrested in poison plot DUBLIN (AP) Police arrested a man Saturday after a threat to poison England's water supply unless there was a "total, permanent and unconditional British military and political withdrawal" from Northern Ireland. After the arrest was reported in the Dublin Evening Herald, Britain's Cabinet Office disclosed that there had been monthlong police investigation into three threatening letters sent to senior figures around June letters, "claiming to be from a previously unheard of Irish terror group, the Republican Revenge Group, threatened "mass murder" by contaminating water supplies with a common weed killer if the British were not out of Northern Ireland by June 16. The letters did not specify when the poisoning would be done, and it was unclear whether the authors had the capability to fulfill the threat.

The curfew affects road and river travel. Citizens will be free to be outside of their homes, Interior Minister Nestor Humberto Martinez told Caracol Television. As military tensions escalated, thousands of Colombians prayed for peace at an open air mass in downtown Bogota, the capital. At a ceremony marking the end of a Catholic pilgrimage, churchmen called for a cease-fire to end the 35-year conflict that has claimed at least 30,000 lives.

The dusk-to-dawn curfew covered parts of the central states of Cundinamarca and Tolima, and eight states in rebel-dominated southeastern Colombia. U.N. delays East Timor voting UNITED NATIONS (AP) Citing escalating violence in East Timor and attacks on his personnel, the United Nations chief will delay voter registration for a ballot on the territory's future for three days. Secretary-General Kofi Annan said the extra time will enable Indonesia to take "concrete steps" toward improving the security situation and meeting U.N. criteria for the vote to go ahead.

Annan made no mention of a new date for the actual ballot, now set for Aug. 21 or 22. And it wasn't immediately clear if the three-day delay from Tuesday to Friday will push back the voting date by three days. It was, however, the second time Annan has postponed the voting process because of escalating violence in the half-island territory, and the U.N. chief expressed concern that the security situation remained serious despite the recent deployment of U.N.

Turkish troops kill Kurdish rebels ANKARA, Turkey (AP) Thousands of Turkish troops backed by helicopter gunships killed 40 Kurdish rebels during a weeklong offensive in northern Iraq, a news report said Saturday. Private NTV television said the troops withdrew early Saturday but gave few other details. No Turkish casualty figures were given. Military officials could not be reached for comment.

Iraq has condemned the offensive, launched July 3, calling it a violation of its sovereignty. Troops went nine miles inside Iraqi territory, reports said.
